Scientific Method Discussion

1. It is possible that since the student is sitting in the back of the classroom, he is having difficulties paying attention to the lecture and staying awake.

2.  Test
       a. I would test this hypothesis by having the student sit at various locations of the classroom. For example i would have the student sitting in the middle, and also in the front of the classroom. I would alter conditions of this test by changing locations of where the student is sitting to best fit his problem of falling asleep.
      b.  If the student stays awake while sitting in the front of the classroom then my hypothesis will be supported.
      c. If the student keeps falling asleep in his changed location then my hypothesis will be falsified.

3. An example of an untestable, unfalsified explanation of why the student is falling asleep would be that the student feels he does not need to pay attention if class because he is overconfident and believes he could pass the class while sleeping through the lecture.

  1. Hey Desiree, that's a great way to look at the issue. In your hypothesis of an untestable explanation, wouldn't checking his grade be a way you could test that theory?

  2. Testable Hypothesis (5/5) - Good.
    Test (5/5)
    Support (5/5)
    Falsify (5/5)
Untestable Hypothesis (5/10) - Opinions and feelings may be difficult to test, but that isn't the same thing as untestable. Anything that is real, including feelings of overconfidence and perceptions of his ability in the class, is detectable, observable, and therefore testable.
